How to select a deep hole drilling machine
The right platform depends on far more than drilling depth. Use these six factors to define the process before comparing machine models.
Define the hole geometry
Start with diameter, total depth, entry angle, exit condition and whether holes intersect internal features. The depth-to-diameter ratio helps determine tooling, guide support, coolant pressure and chip evacuation requirements.
Match the process to the material
Tool steel, stainless steel, titanium, aluminum and cast iron behave differently during deep-hole machining. Material grade and hardness influence drill type, cutting speed, coolant flow and achievable surface finish.
Set realistic quality targets
Specify bore tolerance, straightness, position, surface roughness and any datum relationship. These targets should be evaluated together with the material, hole ratio and production environment.
Choose drill-only or drilling-milling
A dedicated gun drilling machine is efficient for focused deep-hole work. A drilling-milling platform can reduce setups when the component also needs face milling, conventional drilling, tapping or complex-angle machining.
Evaluate the complete workpiece
Part dimensions, weight, clamping surfaces and handling method define table size, travel, load capacity and fixture design. For round bars and shafts, rotation and support become central to the machine concept.
Plan for production and support
Consider batch size, cycle-time target, operator workflow, automation, filtration, tool change, power supply and service requirements. A successful machine selection balances accuracy with practical factory operation.
