TECHNICAL QUESTIONS
Deep hole drilling
machine FAQ.
Practical answers for engineers, buyers and manufacturers evaluating CNC gun drilling and drilling-milling equipment.
What is considered deep hole drilling?
Deep hole drilling commonly describes a hole with a relatively high depth-to-diameter ratio. As the ratio increases, drill guidance, coolant pressure, chip evacuation and machine alignment become increasingly important.
What hole diameter range can HYM machines cover?
Representative HYM platforms cover approximately Ø1.5–60 mm gun drilling. The exact range depends on the selected model, material, tooling, depth and required quality.
What drilling depth is available?
Standard platforms include multiple depth options, while custom projects can be engineered for substantially longer holes. HYM has technical documentation for extended-depth configurations up to 5,000 mm project examples.
Can one machine perform deep hole drilling and milling?
Yes. DM Series machines combine gun drilling, twist drilling, U-drilling, milling and tapping. AMD Series machines add multi-axis positioning, dual spindles and automatic tool change for more complex work.
When should I choose a five-axis machine?
Choose a five-axis platform when the workpiece has angled holes, several machined faces or complex mold geometry. Multi-axis positioning can reduce re-clamping and help protect positional relationships between features.
What accuracy and roughness can be achieved?
Representative technical data includes H8–H11 hole accuracy, straightness around 0.25/500 mm and surface roughness to Ra ≤3.2 μm. Actual results depend on material, tooling, diameter, depth and process conditions.
Why is high-pressure coolant important?
Coolant delivered through the drilling system lubricates and cools the cutting zone while carrying chips out of the bore. Flow, pressure and filtration must match the hole diameter and drilling process.
Can HYM customize workholding and automation?
Yes. Fixtures, rotary tables, shaft supports, travels, controls, chip handling, tool systems and automation can be configured around the workpiece and production target.
Which industries use HYM deep hole machines?
Applications include plastic and die-casting molds, automotive components, aerospace, medical devices, energy equipment, shafts, valves and general precision engineering.
What should I send for a model recommendation?
Send the drawing, part dimensions and weight, material and hardness, hole diameter and depth, entry angle, tolerance, roughness, annual quantity, cycle-time target and any required milling or automation.
